Around 2 a.m. on Aug. 6, a man was caught on surveillance breaking the glass on the main door of the Simply Irie restaurant on 6th Street S.W.

The man reached through the door to unlock it, went into the restaurant, jumped across the countertop and yanked the cash register out before fleeing on a bicycle.

“Thanks to a number of tips from the public, he was identified. We wish to thank the public and the media for assisting us in providing some answers for the business owner who has dealt with at least three occurrences of theft this year,” police said in a news release.

“We believe more than one suspect is responsible for the thefts.”

Aaron Robert Varalta is charged with break and enter in relation to the Aug. 6 incident. He will next appear in court on Monday, Sept. 27.
